Professional Experience:

October 2011 – Present

Researcher at Nesta

  • General research support, with a focus on supporting the Creative Councils programme.
  • Inputs -Provided with research briefs by 5 different councils from which I was required to design a reporting framework and produce a report.
  • Process – This was an iterative process in which I was required to work with council representatives and innovation unit staff to refine the brief.
  • Outputs – 5 in depth reports that have gone on to inform the design of the councils’ proposals.
September 2011

Freelance Consultant for The Social Innovation Partnership (TSIP)

  • Brought in to evaluate a weekend social innovation camp run by TSIP and Social Fabric.
  • Inputs – Consultation with organizers to define a framework for the evaluation and objectives for the finished report.
  • Process – These included an overall assessment of the process and an analysis of the future potential of the camp including recommendations for how to develop the business model.
  • Outputs – A comprehensive report for the event organizers evaluating the success of the weekend and highlighting areas of potential.
May 2011 to Oct 2011

Project Manager and Consultant at Volans

  • Brought in to manage a project aimed at building a community of organizations and individuals working in sustainability and social innovation in London.
  • Inputs – Consultation with Volans staff including their chairman John Elkington, to outline objectives for the programme.
  • Process – Organised and facilitated a series of brainstorming sessions with leading sustainability organizations including Forum for the Future, Sustainability, Nike and SAP.
  • Outputs – The production of design and functionality briefs to go to web designers based on the findings of the brainstorming sessions.
Sep 2010 to April 2011 Project Manager on The Waterways Project

  • Brought in as a part-time researcher but soon appointed full-time project manager.
  • Inputs – A series of research briefs exploring multiple sectors that had been identified as possible sources of social enterprise on British Waterways.
  • A broad outline of the goals and objectives of the project.
  • Process – The creation of a research framework.
  • The identification of key stakeholders and the design of a communications strategy targeting each of these stakeholder groups.
  • Outputs – The production of a series of eight research reports exploring the sectors previously identified including the potential for local energy production.
  • The management of the communication strategy on a day-to-day basis including managing the inputs of other team members. This resulted in the resulted in the engagement of ministers, politicians, civil servants and representatives of civil society in the attainment of their goals.

Jan 2011 to April 2011 Production Manager for OxfordJam’11

  • Responsible for the management of the guest list, content and event logistics. This involved the coordination of the timetable and relationships with potential contributors.

Sep to Dec 2010 Communications Assistant at Fairfood International

  • Development of relationships with media and other NGOs and the exchange of content. I managed to establish a collaborative partnership with Foodbev.com who published a number of blog pieces by Fairfood.
  • Development and implementation of a comprehensive communications strategy aimed at increasing Fairfood’s profile in the UK. I gained significant exposure for the organization in industry media including PR Week.
  • Documentation of all relevant information within various administrative systems including Microsoft Excel, Google docs and Fairfood’s own internal database.
  • Sale of advertising, focusing primarily on Fairfood’s banner campaigns.

March 2010 to July 2010

Research Assistant for the International Centre for the Study of Radicalization  ICSR)

  • Assisted with research for blog articles and reports using a combination of literary and web-based techniques.
  • Research for and production of a large-scale distribution database using Excel.
  • Recording the audio for all Iscor’s seminars and publishing it online.
  • Contacting and sending invites to high profile invitees for Iscor’s conference in New York in July of 2010.

Nov 08 to April 09 Teaching Assistant at Annunciation and Gainsborough Primary Schools

  • The provision of support in all areas to the teacher. This involved teaching smaller groups specific lessons in Moths and English depending on their ability level. A number of the kids under my charge performed better in their SATs than expected.
  • Responsible for the provision of one on one attention to the most needy and often the most disruptive kids in the class, assisting them with all aspects of the curriculum.
March 05 to June 05 Volunteer for the Sewelanka Foundation
  • In the immediate aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.
  • The production of reports in English for the organization based on their achievements in the field and their progress towards reaching their targets, a number of which appeared in Sewelanka’s monthly newsletter.
  • Established myself as a key English language liaison between my field office and Sewelanka’s foreign donors. This involved showing donor organizations around field sites and sitting in on meetings.
